The Foreign Exchange

The Introduction

You, as a fifth grader, have been chosen to represent our school in an exchange program for the first week of May. This trip will depart in four days for Mexico. Before you leave, you need to understand a few things about how to speak their language, their holiday in May, and their country and culture. Therefore, before you leave you will need to complete this WebQuest and all the assignments inside it.

The Task

This WebQuest will help you become familiar with some of the Spanish words you will need to survive on this trip. Another section of this WebQuest will allow you to become familiar with their holiday, Cinco de Mayo and why they celebrate it. You will accomplish all of this by visiting websites, doing activities, and some projects that will prepare you for your trip.

By the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to do the following:

• Ask a few questions in the Spanish language and be able to answer questions as well.
• Recognize the Mexican flag and explain the colors.
• Be able to explain Cinco de Mayo and how it relates to the American holiday, July 4th.

 

The Process

• First, you must visit Mexico and read all about Mexico City. You only need to read the first section. Upon completion of the Mexico reading a one page paper about the country of Mexico will be due at the conclusion of this project.  The paper needs to be typed, double spaced.  To return to the main menu use the back key at the top of the keyboard.
• Next, visit the Flag page. After looking at the flag, click to the History of the flag.  Make sure you understand the colors of the Mexican flag and what they represent. To find this information, click on History box.  A representation of the flag will be turned in. Use your imagination to create one.
• Language is next. Go to GAMES. In this section of the project, I want you to play two games in each category to familiarize yourself with their language. I want a printed sheet of one of the word searches. Be aware, each puzzle may or may not have the same words.
• Next, we will journey together to the Cinco de Mayo. Here, you will be expected to visit Cinco de Mayo. After visiting that site, a Short Quiz can be found. Please take the quiz and print out your results.

Grading

Grading will be as follows:

Paper 20 points
Flag Representation 20 points
Completed word search 20 points
Quiz 30 points

Total 90 points

 

      Conclusion

            This project is now complete if you have turned in everything.  This experience should have been fun and exciting for you .  I hope you learned lots of new and exciting information that you will be able to use in the future.
