Overview

This is a quest created to help students recall the adventures of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." This is primarily for kindergarten and first-grade students. This short-term quest is designed to take one day and is intended for students who have read or seen "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" story.

Introduction

You are going to join Dorothy and the other characters from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" in their journey down the yellow brick road. But, in order to find the Emerald City and the Great Oz you will need to draw a map of how to get there!

Luckily, you have made a list of characters you will meet and places you will stop along the way. Just put them in order on your map as they appeared in the story.

With your nicely drawn Yellow Brick Road map, Dorothy and the rest of the gang will be able to get to Emerald City and meet the Great Oz easily and effortlessly!

The Process

Materials: two pieces of plain drawing paper

 

TASK 1 - First piece of paper:

Yellow Brick Road Map!

On the bottom left corner of your paper, draw a big "X." Name the "X" Kansas (Kansas is where Dorothy's lives).

Now write the word "OZ" at the top right corner of your paper. Dorothy and her friends want to meet the Great Oz. In order to meet Oz they will need to follow the yellow brick road.

Now draw a long winding road from the "X" to "OZ" using lots of winding roads with lots of bricks! Be sure to color the road YELLOW!

To complete your Yellow Brick Road map, write the name of the character or place Dorothy and her friends meet in the order they appear in the story. Don't forget the list you made!

Yellow Brick Road Map Example:

One of the first characters Dorothy meets is the Scarecrow. So, you would write the word "scarecrow" near the beginning of your yellow brick road map....and so on!

TASK TWO - Second piece of paper:

 

Matching Game!

Below are the main characters from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." On your piece of paper, copy the table as it is below, then draw lines to match the "Character" with what they were "Looking For" from the Great Oz!
