In order for a family to receive an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and then be eligible for a financial aid package from college, a FREE APPLICATION OF FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) must be submitted. Also, to be eligible for many state funded grants, scholarships, and tuition assistance programs, a FAFSA needs to be completed. This application become available for students on October 1st each year.
A pin number (electronic signature) must be obtained before you can fill out the FAFSA online. To get a pin, click here:
Once you have been assigned a PIN, you visit their website (fafsa.gov) and begin working on the FAFSA.
Here is what will happen after you complete the FAFSA:
- Student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).
- You review the SAR for errors. Each college you chose will also receive your SAR.
- Colleges then prepare a financial aid package. Every college will have a different package. This package may contain different types of financial aid.
- Student will sign the award letter for the college they choose.
- Students need to make sure they accept the award letter by the college's deadline.
